Civilian staff member at Naval Post Graduate arrested on child pornography charges
A Naval Post Graduate School supervising physicist who was part of a project that was launched into orbit aboard a 1991 space shuttle launch has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.
Jay Adeff was arrested Wednesday at his home on the 18,000 block of Kilpatrick Lane in the upscale neighborhood of East Garrison on the former Fort Ord. At least one neighbor who spoke to Action News 8 was shocked to learn their neighbor was arrested on child pornography charges.
“Well the nature of this type of crime is that it is very, very covert, obviously not something you want your neighbors your loved ones your family members to know about,” said Derrel Simpson, spokesman for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say it was a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children back in December that got the Monterey County Sheriff's Office involved.
Investigators then worked with the Silicon Valley Internet Crimes against Children task force and served search warrants at Adeff's East Garrison home where they recovered numerous computers, Mac books, hard drives, even floppy discs.
“I know of all my years in the investigative unit I don't believe I've ever recovered anywhere close to as many Macbooks laptops and things of that nature that this detective collected in this case,” Simpson said.
Investigators say so far they've found roughly 20 images of child pornography belonging to the NPS supervising physicist but a forensic study has yet to be done of all his electronics.
“It could yield nothing or it could be the absolute pandora box and the biggest case this department as ever seen we just won't know until we get into it,” Simpson said.
According to a thesis written by Adeff at NPS he was part of the Space Thermoacoustic Refrigerator (STAR) project.
According to a report summary his thesis sought to “demonstrate the potential of this technology for cooling satellite electronics and sensors.”
A statement released by the Naval Post Graduate school read: “We are aware that a civilian staff member of the Naval Postgraduate School was arrested off base by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 9. The matter is currently under investigation by local authorities. Questions regarding the arrest should be referred to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.”
The 59-year-old Adeff was released from the Monterey county jail late Thursday afternoon, after posting $20,000 bail.
