Internet crimes against children continue to be one of the biggest threats against our youth and now Salinas police are stepping up their efforts to combat the problem head-on.“it's very important in the sense that we are now keeping up with certain technology that we may not have kept up with in the past,” said Gabriel Gonzalez of Salinas police.Thursday morning Salinas police rolled out a new mobile forensics unit that will address the root of many crimes against children; technology.Whether it involves human trafficking, predators or child pornography the perpetrators will use computers, cell phones, and the internet and to abuse and victimize children. With the new mobile unit police, armed with search warrants can roll out to any location and do an on the spot forensics analysis of any suspects’ electronic devices that may store evidence supporting their crimes.“Some of these devices that we're looking at you're talking about having 50, 60, 70- thousand images on them so just having an ability to go in there and start looking at what's on somebody's computer or cellphone to see if there are other victims to see if there's stuff we need to follow up on the spot,” said Gonzalez.Another feature of the mobile forensics unit is that it has its own interview room where investigators can interview suspects, even victims and witnesses.“Even for the survivors and the victims, that we can actually talk to them out there in an environment that's a little better than a patrol car is a little better,” said Danny Warner who along with Gonzalez will supervise the new unit.Prior to getting the new unit, Salinas police worked with the Silicon Valley internet crimes against children task force to do coordinate forensics analysis. But that unit covered an area stretching from the central coast to Contra Costa county. With Salinas getting their own unit they can now help police departments around the central coast investigate similar crimes, helping them to build better cases against the perpetrators.“We want to make sure that we're deploying our resources and equipment, people as soon as possible to help the victims and the survivors get them out of that situation, that's the main thing. And the next thing we want to do is get the person that perpetrated these crimes… off of the street as soon as possible so they can't victimize other people,” said Warner.Salinas police were able to buy and equip the unit with the help of a $200,000 federal grant.

“it's very important in the sense that we are now keeping up with certain technology that we may not have kept up with in the past,” said Gabriel Gonzalez of Salinas police.

Thursday morning Salinas police rolled out a new mobile forensics unit that will address the root of many crimes against children; technology.

Whether it involves human trafficking, predators or child pornography the perpetrators will use computers, cell phones, and the internet and to abuse and victimize children.

With the new mobile unit police, armed with search warrants can roll out to any location and do an on the spot forensics analysis of any suspects’ electronic devices that may store evidence supporting their crimes.

“Some of these devices that we're looking at you're talking about having 50, 60, 70- thousand images on them so just having an ability to go in there and start looking at what's on somebody's computer or cellphone to see if there are other victims to see if there's stuff we need to follow up on the spot,” said Gonzalez.

Another feature of the mobile forensics unit is that it has its own interview room where investigators can interview suspects, even victims and witnesses.

“Even for the survivors and the victims, that we can actually talk to them out there in an environment that's a little better than a patrol car is a little better,” said Danny Warner who along with Gonzalez will supervise the new unit.

Prior to getting the new unit, Salinas police worked with the Silicon Valley internet crimes against children task force to do coordinate forensics analysis.

But that unit covered an area stretching from the central coast to Contra Costa county.

With Salinas getting their own unit they can now help police departments around the central coast investigate similar crimes, helping them to build better cases against the perpetrators.

“We want to make sure that we're deploying our resources and equipment, people as soon as possible to help the victims and the survivors get them out of that situation, that's the main thing. And the next thing we want to do is get the person that perpetrated these crimes… off of the street as soon as possible so they can't victimize other people,” said Warner.

Salinas police were able to buy and equip the unit with the help of a $200,000 federal grant.
