PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

In this presentation, investigators will learn how to trace emails from the information provided in email headers. This presentation will focus on the protocols used to transmit emails across the Internet, the effect of the different protocols on email headers, how to read and decipher email header content, and how to trace IP addresses. Discussion in this module will cover the following topics:
  • How emails travel the Internet
  • Introduction to email headers
  • Introduction to email protocols
  • Interpreting email headers
  • Tracing email from email header information
    • Email addresses
    • IP addresses
    • Message IDs
  • Timestamp issues
  • Tracing IP addressee
PRESENTER BIO
Mr. Todd A. Colvin is a Computer Training Specialist in the Training Services department of SEARCH, The National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics, where he performs a variety of tasks related to the provision of training to local, state and federal agencies on computer technology issues with criminal justice applications. Mr. Colvin provides technical assistance to law enforcement agencies in active cases, prepares training materials, teaches SEARCH investigative courses and speaks at conferences throughout the United States. He also researches techniques for online investigations and assists with computer forensic examinations. He is the creator of DataGrab, a program for online investigators using the online chat program, mIRC.
Mr. Colvin joined SEARCH in 1999 as an Intern and Instructional Aide. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Portland State University, a master’s degree in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven and a professional certificate in Forensic Computer Investigation from the University of New Haven. He is one of the few civilians ever to be granted entry into, and receive certification from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program for computer crimes investigation. Mr. Colvin is a certified instructor through the California Commission on POST’s Robert J. Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI).
